Case Study Two - The Newdell Company
Customer
The Newdell Company - An industrial manufacturer and wholesaler of valves for the petrochemical, chemicals, and refinery markets.
Challenges
- Reduce pick times
- Decrease pick costs
- Recover floor space
- Improve inventory control
Solution
Installation of 2 KardexRemstar Shuttle Vertical Lift Modules (VLMs) - Having moved into a new 120,000 square foot manufacturing and distribution facility, The Newdell Company sought to improve its productivity with a more efficient storage and picking process for its valves and related products.
Following a comprehensive audit of Newdell’s warehousing operation and inventory needs, Vertical Storage Systems recommended the installation of two KardexRemstar Shuttle VLMs. Each unit is 23’ high x 7’ x 10’ and holds up to 75 trays with a 1,100 pound weight capacity per tray, 88,000 pound capacity per unit.
Results
Reduced Pick Time Costs From 23 to 3 cents - Newdell warehouse personnel no longer walk aisle to aisle to pick an item. And unlike a carousel, Newdell’s VLM units only pick the trays requested.
Recovered Inventory Floor Space - Newdell recovered 70% of its inventory floor space - from 1,100 to 140 square feet.
Compressed Inventory Replenish Time - Data entry for Newdell’s inventory replenishment is performed at the VLM unit, or through the host system
Improved Pick Accuracy - Access codes track inventory pulls by operator
Reduced Worker Compensation Claims - The unit delivers every tray to ergonomic height
